Stephen was born in 1960 in Rochford, Essex. His early life was spent in Sevenoaks. He decided on a career as an artist when, at the age of eight, he was enthralled by a print of Caravaggio’s Conversion of St Paul. He trained at Medway College of Art (1979 – 80), took his BA (Hons) at Cheltenham College of Art and Technology (1980 – 83) and attended the British School in Rome in 1982. He won a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Art (1983 – 86, RA dip). In 1992 he was elected Brother of the Art Workers Guild.
